Marquitta Toran first learned about Accurate back in 2007 when one of their clients reached out to her to tell her about an open role as a researcher. At the time, she says, “I had no idea what a researcher was.” But she was intrigued, so agreed to an interview. And she was immediately sold on the company.
“I guess I was just really drawn to the mystery of it all,” Marquitta says. She acknowledges that she is a very curious person so the idea of a job as a researcher was intriguing.”
In addition, one of the things that made an initial positive impression for her, she says, is that “the president was walking around and greeting employees and I thought that was really cool.”
Trying Out a Variety of Roles
About three months after being in the researcher role, Marquitta moved into a sales support position, working directly with the president and a VP to work with newer clients to help onboard them, as well as doing some cold calling to bring other customers on board. In 2009 she moved into an account management role working with various teams within Accurate—implementation teams, sales teams, and integration teams—to help customers through their journey.
Then, while she says that at the time she really didn’t have an interest in being a customer service supervisor or training, she moved into a supervisory role in the customer service department where she was responsible for onboarding new hires. And, she says, “I really found my calling with training.”
Finding Her Calling
Accurate, says Marquitta, gave her the opportunity to start training new hires and putting together a training program. “I never imaged that I would be doing things like creating e-learning videos or training groups of 20-50 people,” she says.
Soon she moved into a supervisory role in the learning and development area. “It was very exciting to go from an entry level researcher to being responsible for all of the training in the organization—and very rewarding,” she says.
Today Marquitta is an account manager and is responsible for client success and making sure that they see the value of their training and screening programs, helping them onboard people and helping to streamline the background screening program.
Changing Over Time
Marquitta has seen a lot of changes at Accurate since she joined them in 2007—not only in her own role with the company but in how the company does business overall. At the time, she says, there were only about 20 people with the company. And much of the work that was done involved paper. “Now you don’t see a lot of paper,” she laughs.
But, despite the growth, Marquitta says Accurate still has a “family feel.” While she says she doesn’t know every single person’s name like she used to “there is still that sense of family that we feel without our teams.”
A People-Focused Culture
The culture at Accurate, Marquitta says, “is very people focused.” Everyone is eager to help she says—helping each other and also helping other people get jobs. “It’s a very positive culture and there’s definitely a lot of focus on development and helping employees grow.” It’s a very supportive, very helpful culture, she says.
Accurate’s culture is built on four core values pillars that unify the company with a common purpose, define where they’re headed, indicate what they’ll do to get there, what they believe in, and how they will behave with each other and their customers. They are:
- Take ownership: be accountable for your actions, your team, and the company.
- Be open: be open to new ideas.
- Stay curious: stay curious even as you move forward.
- Work as one: work together to create the best customer and workplace experience.
The one that resonates with Marquitta the most, she says, is stay curious. “I always want to learn more, to do more, to ask questions and really understand what’s going on. For me, that’s a very important value.” She also attributes that particular value to her own success with the company.
“I started in a role, and I just kept learning more, wanting to do more, taking on more—and staying curious.”
Being a Part of Helping Others Grow
Looking back over her career with Accurate, Marquitta says that one of the things she’s most proud of is the role that she has played in helping others grow. People she’s trained, she says, often come up to thank her for helping them on their initial journey. And, she says, “a lot of people that I trained 10 years ago are now in leadership or global operation roles—it’s really fun and exciting to watch them grow and to be able to play a role.”
Marquitta says that she would definitely encourage others to consider Accurate as a great place to work for its culture, the opportunities, and its family feeling despite the tremendous growth she’s seen over the past 15+ years.
