Background Checks for Iowa Employers

Hiring decisions can shape your company’s future. While a candidate might look like an exceptional employee on paper, it’s not always clear if they’re the right fit for your business, or that they’re eligible for the role being filled.

That’s what makes Iowa background checks such a valuable tool for employers. Accurate provides Iowa background checks tailored to your industry and business needs, giving you more information on each candidate and making it easier to make important hiring decisions.

Our background checks go beyond surface-level résumé reviews. We can verify past employment, confirm degrees and educational achievements, verify professional licenses, and provide essential criminal history information.

What’s Typically Included in an Iowa Background Check

Background checks can be tailored to your company’s needs and industry requirements. While not every screening includes the same components, most Iowa background checks will cover some or all of the following:

  • AccurateReach: a tips and leads search that provides a national database search to help uncover more criminal records than those solely found through the candidate’s address history
  • Criminal Background Check Services, including County, state, and federal criminal searches
  • Employment history
  • Education verification, including verifications of credentials and other certifications
  • Professional license verification
  • Motor vehicle driving history
  • Sex offender registry search
  • Government and healthcare sanctions

By customizing the products included in your background check reports, you can focus on the information that is related to the role you’re trying to fill.

Iowa Background Check Considerations

Background check requirements and restrictions vary from state to state. For Iowa employers, there are a few important points to consider:

  1. Ban the Box Laws: While Iowa does not have a state-wide Ban the Box law, in local jurisdictions such as the cities of Des Moines and Waterloo require employers to wait until the end of the application process (i.e. after a conditional offer of employment has been made) to ask about criminal history. Exceptions may apply for positions where employers are required by federal or state law—or by the nature of the position—to exclude applicants or employees with certain criminal records.
  2. Marijuana Use and Employment: Iowa’s Medical Cannabidiol Act permits the use of medical marijuana under specific conditions. However, state law allows employers to implement policies restricting the use of marijuana by employees for the purpose of promoting workplace health and safety and establish and enforce zero-tolerance or drug-free workplace policies.
  3. FCRA Compliance: As with all U.S. employers, Iowa businesses must follow the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). This means getting written consent before conducting a background check, providing proper disclosures, and following specific pre-adverse and adverse action procedures if you plan to rescind a job offer based, or partly based, on the information reported in a background check.
