How long does it take to run a background check?

The turnaround time varies based on what is being conducted as part of your screening. A basic criminal search is typically returned within 1 to 2 business days while a more comprehensive package may average 3 to 4 business days. The turnaround time may also vary depending on the counties being searched and the responsiveness of the source. Holidays and weekends do not count towards processing time.

What are the reasons a background check might be delayed?

We make every effort to avoid unnecessary delays in completing your background check requests. There are certain situations where information is delayed for reasons beyond our control, such as:

  • Natural disasters resulting in court closures and/or power outages, or
  • Unexpected court clerk delays.
  • Other Information Needed (i.e. Release Needed, Verification of SSN, etc.)
  • Holidays
  • Weekends

What is a dispute?

A dispute is any challenge or claim that information on the background check report is inaccurate or incomplete. The disputed item can pertain to anything on the consumer report, such as criminal searches or verification results.

How do I dispute information found on my background check report?

Complete the below form to submit your dispute request. Someone from our Dispute Department will reach out to help you complete your dispute request.

How do I check on my dispute request?

You may contact our Client Services Team at 800.216.8024, Sunday through Friday from 7:00 PM to 6:00 PM Pacific Standard Time to check on the status of your dispute. At the end of the investigation process, a representative from our Dispute Department will contact you regarding the results of your dispute.

How long does it take to complete a dispute?

Each dispute is handled as a case-by-case scenario, so the completion time will vary. It is hard to give a timeframe, but each dispute is expedited to the best of our ability and will be completed within the allotted time regulated by the FCRA. However, it usually just takes a couple of weeks on average.

Will the dispute put a hold or delay the hiring process?

Each potential employer has their own hiring policies and you will need to contact them directly to find more information.

How do I notify my potential employer of my dispute?

Accurate Background will notify your potential employer (the company who requested your background check) that you have initiated a dispute regarding information on your background check report. You may also contact them directly to make them aware of your dispute.

How does the dispute process work?

Accurate Background will investigate all the items in question by contacting the source of the disputed information. The investigation process is usually concluded within 30 days from the date we received your dispute. When this process is complete, Accurate Background will notify you and the company who requested the background check of the investigation results.

Who do you contact to process my dispute?

Accurate Background will contact the source of the disputed information. For example, we will contact the appropriate court if your dispute pertains to criminal search results; and we will contact your past employer if your dispute pertains to employment verification results.

What if I submit more than one dispute at the same time?

We will investigate all of the items in question during the same time period. At the end of the investigation, you and your potential employer will be notified of the results.

Can someone else file a dispute on my behalf?

We strongly recommend that you file your own dispute. However, your attorney or potential employer may, with your authorization, file a dispute on your behalf. We will contact you directly if additional information is needed to initiate the investigation. If your dispute is submitted by your attorney, we will need you to provide us with a letter stating that you authorize us to discuss your dispute with your attorney.

What if an address found and reported, or the duration is incorrect?

Although Accurate Background has reasonable procedures to assure maximum accuracy, due to the large number of contributing sources, mistaken addresses and incorrect durations may occur. The Address Mover search gathers information from National Background Data, whose data is developed from a multitude of venues such as credit bureaus, public records (real property) and moving records from mailing houses. You may contact Accurate Background to file a dispute so we may update your report. However, it is also recommended you contact the National Background Data directly at 866.389.8817 to inquire about the mistaken information at the source.

How safe is my information?

Accurate Background has policies, procedures and processes in place to ensure the security of your information. We employ the highest level of encryption available for data protection and all personally identifiable information is masked internally as well as externally when provided to the company who requested the background check on you.

You may log in to MyPortal at any time to check the status of your background check. You may also contact our Client Services team at 800-216-8024 or send an email to customer_service@accuratebackground.com. Please include your full name and the search reference ID, if available.

How do I request a copy of my background check?

You can download a copy of your completed background check by logging in to MyPortal at any time. You may also contact our Client Services team at 800-216-8024 or send an email to customer_service@accuratebackground.com. Please include your full name and the search reference ID, if available.

What does a background check consist of?

What is included in a background check is determined by your potential employer or the company that requested your background check. The background check order may include any of the services offered by Accurate Background, such as employment and education verification, criminal searches, driving records and more. Why did a company run a background check on me?

A company may have performed a background check on you because you have submitted a job application or request to work for the company, or you are working on their behalf. In the MyPortal dashboard, you will be able to see which company requested the background check. We recommend reaching out to the company who ordered the background check to understand why the background check was performed.

I was told I need to upload documents, what do I do?

You can upload documents at any time by logging into MyPortal with the credentials sent to your email address when the background check was initiated.

Why didn't I pass my background check?

You may have been disqualified from employment due to information found during your background check or because of information that was unable to be verified. Hiring decisions are made by the company you are applying to and we recommend contacting them regarding any hiring decisions.
